Paintings on the walls of the apse are of four doctors of the Western Church by artist Joseph Reiter. They are Saint Ambrose (+397), Doctor of the Independence and Unity of the Church; Saint Augustine (+430), Universal Doctor of Grace; Saint Jerome (+420), Doctor of Sacred Scripture, translator of the Bible into Latin; Saint Gregory the Great (+604), Monk, Liturgist, Pope.
